Webster Police Chief Joe Rieger was kind enough to join us to for a very interesting and fact filled presentation on the history of the Webster Police Department.

 

The police department was started in 1928 when Homer Pulver asked to be the first police officer for the village.  After having been turned down initially, he was hired 6 months later without pay.  He solved 17 of  28 burglaries in the village.  The state troopers assisted him.  He retired at the age of 44.  Albert Hessler became the 1^st town of Webster police officer.  He policed both the town and the village.

 

Chief Rieger was hired to the police department in 1989.  He grew up on Whiting Road and attended Klem North, Schroeder Junior High School, and Thomas High School.  He was part of the first combined Webster High School.  He was a conservationist and wanted to become a game warden.  He attended CCFL and interned for the DEC in Warrensburg.  He was a park ranger in Lake George but then returned to finish his schooling at Brockport.  He applied and began working for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department.  He was there 4 months in 1988 before he joined the Webster Police Department in 1989.

 

The department’s goals are to protect life and property, resolve conflicts, maintain community security, reduce the opportunity for crime, and preserve the peace.

 

There are currently 31 members of the police department.  It takes 6 months to hire a new police officer.  The department runs 3 platoons (11p-7a, 7a-3p, and 3p-11p).  The patrol area is broken down in 3 areas: 951 is west of Five Mile Line Road, 952 is between Five Mile Line Road and 250, and 953 is 250 to County Line Road.

 

In 2015, the department answered over 37,000 calls.  The ideal ratio is 1 office per 1,000 residents.  There are currently 46,000 Webster residents and 31 officers.  Ogden, Webster, and Brighton were recently named as one of the safest communities.  The department maintains a Facebook page and can be found at websterpolice.org

 

Robyn needs a head count by 4/7 for the joint meeting with Kiwanis and Lions.  Jillian Ferrence will be the guest speaker for the evening.

 

Robyn is talking to her landlord and the village about creating a little library.  This will help us promote our literacy campaign.

 

Bob wins 50/50 but pulls the Queen of Hearts and the pot grows!!!
