Meeting of June 4th, 2015

Herb reported that the net profit from the 50/50 ticket sales was $845. The winning combination of  Joe & Brian made this possible and we thank them for their service to our club.

There were only positive feedback comments regarding the charities dinner and this writer, for one, thought it to be one of the best, if not the best, we have ever had. The gift card bags, in particular, went over extremely well and I did hear a few expressions of disappointment from folks who missed the opportunity to buy one.

The bar went well with no long waits for beverages and the buffet was also quite satisfactory. I actually sought out the caterer after the event to compliment him for a job well done.

Robyn and Kathy, those two dynamic perpetrators of fun and enjoyment, did a great all around job of making the event a huge success.

And thanks to Herb for persevering through the laborious task of administering the ticket sales...no small feat, believe me. It was reported that Keith Bock donated $200 back to the club  of the $1,000 that he won for being a finalist. Keith has been a faithful patron of our charities dinner for many years.

All in all, it was a great event and we will no doubt tweak it in the immediate future to make it even better next year. Thanks to all who contributed to the success of this, our most important fund raiser.

We inducted Joe Corona into the club with president John officiating. Joe is a financial planner and recently took a new professional position in his field. We look forward to his membership in our club and learning more about his background.

Our guest speaker was Mary Ann Kwiatkowski, Library Assistant for Adult Programs, Webster Public Library.

I am happy, no, very happy, to report that the library is alive and well in spite of cyber challenges that have emerged in our society over the last decades. The Webster library has embraced the new media available to the masses today and endeavored to provide those media to those who do not have ready access to them.

One can download e-books at no charge to their Kindles or the like and keep them for up to three weeks. On-line magazines are also available such as Consumer “Reports.” There are terminals with internet access at the library for those who do not have computer availability at home.

For a small fee you can also have access to scanning, faxing, and printing services.

A job search center is available in addition to a genealogy center

VIP passes are available to residents that enable one free admission with each admission purchased for entry into the Genesee Country Village, Memorial Art Gallery,, Planetarium, and other local attractions. This can amount to considerable savings.

The library conducts a volunteer fair in March each year to enable local clubs to inform residents of various volunteer opportunities.

There is even a seed library for participants to obtain and exchange flower and vegetable seeds (think heirloom tomatoes, Rich).

Mary Ann informed us that a new entrance to the library will be built in the near future on the north side of the building  thus making parking easier than at present.

Funding for the library comes from such sources as the Friends of the Webster Library Foundation and grants, some of which have come from Senator Mike Nozzolio.

All in all, the Webster Public Library is truly alive and well and we are very fortunate to have this gem in our community.

Joan’s ticket won the 50/50 but she drew the Jack of Hearts thus the pot continues to grow.

As mentioned in separate correspondence, Jim Isaac will receive the 78th Annual Rotary Award next Tuesday at the Riverside Convention Center. A number of us have already signed up and there is still time. Contact me, DZ, for details, 746-9465.

Our program this week will be on the subject of the Girl Scouts.

The new 50/50 club tickets were distributed by Rich and we expect to begin the weekly drawings in mid-August, the deadline for selling all the tickets.
