Originally called Alternatives for Battered Women for over 40 years, the organization recently changed its name to Willow Domestic Violence Center of Greater Rochester.  They serve victims of domestic violence; women, children, and men.  They are the only certified provider of domestic violence services in Monroe County.  Why the name Willow?  Willow is a beacon of hope, it bends but doesn’t break, and it has strength from within that radiates out.  They serve more than 7,000 clients per year and over 10,000 students.  They offer a 24/7 hotline, a 40-bed shelter, prevention education, a counseling center, children’s programs and court advocacy.  One in 3 women are victims of domestic violence and one in 4 men.  Local high profile cases include: Charlie Tan, the tragedy in Geneseo, and Alex Kogut from Brockport.  Over 4,800 incidents are reported annually in Monroe County; 51% from the suburbs and 49% in the urban areas.  The impact of family violence affects children tremendously; cognitive development, social emotional learning, poverty, and they are likely to grow up to become a victim or a perpetrator of violence.  The CDC calls it a public health epidemic.  Because of the tremendous need, Willow turns away over 1,600 because their shelter is consistently full.

They are in the midst of an $8M Safe Place Campaign to help build a new shelter and public administration building.  They have raised over $7M and will be opening a new shelter in September.  It will include and on-site pet shelter and expanded counseling center and public accessibility for the first time.  Volunteer opportunities about at Willow including helping them move in September.  Current initiatives include: Heal program at Strong, virtual orders of protection, deaf and hard of hearing inclusion project, and Trauma Informed Care practices.  They can be reached at www.willowcenterny.org for donations.  Thank you to Jaime Saunders for a very emotional and thought provoking presentation.

 

Robyn spoke with Greg Chambery on an evening to spend with the residents on 5/26.  This may include a pizza party with the residents.  Robyn will circle back to Greg on details, etc.  More to follow.

 

The changeover dinner is tentatively set for Thursday, 6/16 @ Hedges.  We will need to confirm with Brian to see if this date works.

 

Robyn received the Governor’s Leadership Award!  Yay Robyn!  Job well done!

 

Kathy was recognized and received the Champions of Hope Award!  Congratulations Kathy!

 

There are 7 tickets left.  Rich bought new table clothes as last year’s are a bit worn.  Don’t forget the Hawaiian theme!  Please email Herb the number of actual attendees by next Friday.  Also please bring in any gift cards by this Thursday’s meeting

 

Keller’s Kats Rescue Chicken BBQ/Paw It Forward Fundraiser on 5/14 at Webster Volunteer Firemen’s Building from 11-4; cost is $12 and food is served 12-3.  The event is also collecting items for the Willow Domestic Violence Center.

 

Miscellaneous – Rich

Rich handed out the Garlic Festival volunteer sign up form.  Forms must be completed and submitted by 7/1 to guarantee you a T-shirt.  Currently, there are 51 vendors of which 13 are garlic focused.  There are 4 food trucks and are looking for 6 more.  At our Rotary tent, we will want to sell/promote a product as all proceeds go to the club.

The Troop Dinner will have 20-25 guys and will probably total over 40 once you factor in family members.  We will have the Patriot Guard, WPD, and WFD.  Invites will go out to Greg Cody, Todd Baxter, Mike Nozzolio, and Mark Johns.
